The Neil Prendival Show with Elevated Credit Union. Text 0868-104-106. The front of many of the papers this morning. Primarily the red tops today. They talk about the passing of Kira McGeehan. Our golden girl gone too soon. Medal-winning athletics hero dies of cancer weeks after her wedding. And I can't stop looking at her wedding photographs where she looked so happy, beaming with smiles. 00:47 And forgive me for saying this. It's just tragic then that she would decline so quickly in a matter of weeks and sadly, so sadly, pass away at such a young, young age, 34 years old yesterday morning. So many of the column inches this morning talk about her as a person, as a wife, as a daughter, as a sister, as a friend. 01:10 And the tribute's just coming in. 34, suffering from cancer. 01:15 I believe it was stage four bowel cancer. 01:20 She went, as I say, married her partner, Thomas Moran, in October, just weeks before her death. It's so tragic. And then they all looked then, of course, at her athletic prowess. She loved Camogie, apparently. She was a great Camogie player, by all accounts, but excelled then on the track. Middle distance running primarily at 1,500 metres. 2016 represented Ireland and Rio 2020 in the Tokyo Olympics. A slew of Irish records have broken and struck gold in 2024 and the championships in Rome. 01:53 And it's awfully, awfully sad. Life is so precious, isn't it? You look at people with so much to live for and their families must be beside themselves with grief. Papers this morning, may she rest in peace. Born 1992, passed away yesterday morning at the age of You look at life for how precious life can be and how in other ways it's literally snuffed out over the... I mean, if this is true, it's just so pointless, really, isn't it? They say that the migrant who was stabbed to death in Tralee at the weekend was killed over loud snoring. 02:30 according to the Mirror. Certainly I made the Mirror yesterday morning. One dead, another injured, and a fellow arrested after the attack. This is a man dying at the centre, which houses migrants following an attack that the Guardie believed could have happened after a row about loud snoring. Like, the Mayor of Tralee then came out and said, I have no idea why. Why would you say asking people to guard against the spread of unnecessary hate I mean, what's all that about? Like people are just trying to get on with their lives and probably as shocked as everybody else as to how somebody could be stabbed. 03:03 I mean, you can't take from the issues with regards to IPAS centres and people living in them and the conditions in which they're living in. Anyway, sometimes I just get confused when I see comments like that, to be honest with you. I mean, you look at the stats where they say in this morning's mail that almost six out of 10 people who are now living in emergency accommodation in Dublin are foreign nationals. So it's like apparently in Dublin, it's 58% of those in emergency accommodation are foreign nationals. In Cork, it's 50% living in emergency accommodation being non-Irish. 03:35 That's the split now at this stage. So that stat continues and those numbers will just... continue to increase as we go ahead. And that's one of the reasons why you have an awful lot of people who are coming into Ireland to work. And I'm not going to go into the socioeconomic groups of those that are coming here. I've done all that in the past. But you see then a lot more pressure in different aspects of societal work, society in Ireland, rental prices, rental availability. property, housing. That's why you're coming across places now, three and four bedroom semis in there with 36 and 38 people living in them. 04:07 I'm not making that up, incidentally. That was the case with all of the Chinese workers recently. But you're also seeing an increase in overcrowding within the A&Es. And we touched on that last week. And to be honest with you, I probably still have more calls with regards to the chaos within our hospital system. For sure I do. But if you just looked at October alone, right, just give me an opportunity. Just look at October, the month of October. That shows the complete crisis that we're in. And spare a thought for those that go to work every day. You might have a very happy workplace where you feel, you know, you're thriving and you're doing really well. 04:38 And you are really just in a job that suits you and you're good at it. And you're giving it your best shot. You couldn't say that about many of the medics. working within our A&E or hospital network. They want to give more. They want to be able to do more. A bit like Angarda Shekinah, one hand behind their back. But like the month of October alone, over 12,500 patients were treated in corridors and chairs. That's 12,672 patients in Irish hospitals in the month of October alone. And the worst of them, the worst of them, Cork University Hospital. 05:10 And probably the worst A&E of them all, Cork University Hospital with the Mercy not too far behind them. And when I say worst, I'm not in any way criticising the staff. I have no idea where they get the will, the physical and the mental strength to even go to work in the first place. And then what are we rearing? We have generation after generation where things just seem to go down the tubes and get worse and worse. And why is it that people can't have nice things, that there's others that want to break everything and wreck everything? And is the generation of thuggery in children now because their parents before them were the previous generation of thugs? 05:47 Or is it that the parents just can't control them? And if so, why so? But you look at all of the Halloween horror and we got in touch with... happy to say, the fire services on Leaside this morning, they said they had a quiet Halloween. You wouldn't say that about areas of Dublin. I mean, what is it with living up in Cherrywood? I know nothing about it, but why am I hearing about this area of Dublin all too often? Yet again, Cherrywood in Dublin. I mean, they call it antisocial behaviour. Yeah, sure. Is it anti-social behaviour to burn out people's cars? Is it anti-social behaviour to set people's homes on fire? 06:21 And to have the, if you combine the Dublin Fire Brigade for the weekend, 1,620 calls, 669 ambulance calls, not all of them, but the vast majority of them associated with Halloween. 06:35 And people being stoned, windows being smashed in. I mean, take a look at the mail this morning. They're talking about stones, rocks and projectiles being thrown at fire crews and fire trucks when they were dealing with antisocial incidents in County Kildare trying to put out fires that get stoned. So they have it nonetheless. And I also have to say that many people had a good time over the Halloween and everything went hunky-dory, apart from the fact that some people found very strange things in the little bags and the little sweets and the little treats that their kids got when they were out and about by all accounts. 07:07 I'll come back to that a little later on. But the papers this morning then talking about, I mean, you might say, why is it that everybody wants to change things? Or why is it that people want to break everything? We know of the grandparents and the whole consent argument there about hugging your grandchildren. 07:24 Wouldn't it be just nice to kind of leave grandparents alone, perhaps? And then, of course, there was the extra box that they wanted to put down for no gender on a birth search. You could be male, female or neither. And then we have Mary McAleese, who comes out this morning. Apparently, she's got a new book out and she says that baptism breaches infants' human rights. Now, some may say it's hypocritical to disagree with her because nobody's going to Mass anyway, and they just use it for social functions. That could well be the baptism, the confirmation, the communion, the wedding, the funeral. 07:55 But you never go to Mass any other week of the year. So what's all this about baptism in the first place? But she says that declaring... And baptizing infants as soon as they're born is actually a breach of the infant's human rights because they can't give their consent and it's carried out without their permission, forcing them to join a faith before they understand the implications of doing so in the first place. And they won't thank you for it when they grow up, apparently, by all accounts. But your thoughts are welcome on that, please. 08:26 Text 0868 104 106. And you get a really good example of Firstly, it was a fairly hefty prison term, which was a three-year prison term with, I think, something like the 18 months of it suspended. So why don't you just give a year and a half prison and just be done with it, rather than saying three years and going to half it. But it's the case of a girl who was before the courts, a 32-year-old girl, where she was driving her car on the M8, near Riverstone and Glanmire. I think she was coming back. 08:59 She was driving from Cork to Portlaoise to get a stash and then was coming back and forth and what have you. But she looked very anxious when she was approached by Gardaí. I don't know, was it a tip-off or was it just a spot check or whatever? But when she was stopped, they looked into the footwell of the passenger seat and there was a stash. There was a bag there with more than three kilograms of cocaine in it. So anyway, she was done to ride before the courts because of this. 09:25 And she got a four and a half year sentence with the last 18 months suspended. But what was interesting about this is that she admitted that this was her second trip to collect drugs to bring them back down to Cork from Dublin. And what's interesting is she said that she'd been paid... 400 euro for the first occasion and given a small amount of cocaine for her own use. So I don't know what it was for the second occasion, perhaps some of the money. But isn't it isn't it a tiny amount of money for such a huge amount of risk, isn't it? 09:56 I mean, think about that. 18 months in jail now because of it for tiny amounts of money. And it's a huge risk. It really and truly is. And other things that are at risk then need to spare a thought for our post office operatives, the male and female that go about their works, delivering the letters as the I don't know. I mean, I was going to say as the Christmas rush comes in and every send everybody's sending Christmas cards. I don't know if that's even the case, but they're getting bitten. They're getting bitten more than ever before, and they break it down. 10:27 Dublin, obviously, with the biggest population, has the most amount of angry dogs. 10:32 We're second. Then there's Limerick, and then there's Kildare and Meath and places like that. But they break it down this morning into the attacks on post workers. So primarily it's dogs, but they've also been bitten by spiders, scratched by cats, and attacked by pigeons. So I'm curious as to whether any of our post office workers who are out there delivering dogs believe they should actually get danger money on the job. I mean, there's a particularly bad one somewhere in Munster. I don't know, could have been a cork one, where a postman or a woman, doesn't say, was attacked by two Labrador dogs. 11:05 Two of them. So you have that in the Independent this morning. They break down the counties with the highest number of animal attacks on post office workers. I mean, it won't be for too much longer because ultimately, of course, the way the world is going, there will be no more posts and everything will be email and everything will be digital. But while all that is happening, we have to continue to observe massive waste. If it wasn't the €340,000 spent on a doll bike shed, it's now warehousing perfectly good electric bikes. 11:38 And this is the NTA. So they're getting 500 new funded e-bikes right and then they have them for a little while and then they decide they're going to put them into storage and they're going to buy new ones instead so these 500 bikes 200 of them are operating in cork incidentally at the moment They've been on the road for eight months. Apparently, they have a life of at least 10 years, and now they're being warehoused. You just couldn't make this stuff. If it was their own money that they were spending, of course, they would look at this entirely differently. 12:09 But this is a million euro worth of public e-bikes being taken off the roads just months after their launch. I mean, it's like... 12:17 It just seems to be ongoing chaos associated with everything to do with public financing. Maybe that's why, I don't know, maybe that's why the popularity of both Simon Harris and Michael Martin and the... 12:32 Support for Fianna Fall and Fianna Gale is just dropping off a cliff. There's a lot of different Christmassy stories. We can talk about Christmas now. Halloween is out of the way. Rub your hands in glee, sissy. It's 53 days to Christmas. So I was asked the question at the weekend, isn't it okay now? Not that I should have to give permission for anything. Nobody listens to anything I say. Isn't it okay now to put up the Machia Christmas tree? 12:56 Knock yourself out, says I. I'm assuming that nobody is selling the real trees just yet. But we're into November, so surely it's Makiya Christmas tree time. I mean, like, the papers this morning are talking about the toy show. They're also talking about the top ten list of... Forgive me, this is not the Santa Claus list, which is entirely different, but the stuff that people buy in Smith's Toys or they buy on Amazon. I'm not even going to begin to attempt to read out the top 10 list because it looks like Latin to me. Oh, hang on a second. I recognise one word. 13:27 Pokemon. 13:28 Remember them? 13:36 Straight to the phone lines, Dee, because Dee's under a bit of pressure and I don't want to hold her too long. Dee, good morning. 13:41 Good morning, Neil. 13:42 Oh, my serious, serious, sincerest condolences. Your family have had an awful week. 13:48 Yeah, it was last week. Yeah, two weeks ago. Yeah. 13:53 So what happened? 13:54 So basically, my mom was sick and had been to the GP and had gotten tablets, but they just weren't working. So she was still being sick. So my sister said, look, we go to A&H. 14:06 And it was a Friday and my sister said it was really busy even when they got up there and there was a queue outside the door to get in, just to get into the entrance of A&E. 14:14 On the steps? 14:16 Yeah, yeah. As you like, when you very first meet someone and get your ticket and that to get in. 14:20 So my sister knew she'd be waiting a long time. So they went in anyway and after a couple of hours, like a good couple of hours, on the Friday, like through the night, had gotten seen and Like basically she was suffering from like dehydration and things like that. So she needed fluids and bits and pieces and investigating exactly what was causing it. So she had been obviously the Friday night. She had been there on a chair and then we came into the Saturday. She was still in A&E in triage. And then it was coming into Saturday night. 14:52 She was still in there and they'd put her on a trolley in triage. 14:56 The corridor of where? 14:58 like so it wasn't in the corridor it's kind of a little section just a bit more kind of like they might throw the curtains behind little kind of cubicles and it's just to like check people so they had put her on a trolley in one of these cubicles but like everything. You're by the nurse's desk and everything's going on. 15:16 There's an awful lot of action back and forth. Of course there is. 15:20 It's the business place. It's not a ward. It's not anything. It's a part of A&E. 15:26 You're parked up, if you like. What I see is she's 24 hours on a chair and then two more nights on a trolley. 15:34 She was three full nights on a trolley in A&E. Like not a room, not anything like when everyone else is coming in and out. 15:44 I hear you. And what happened on the second night? 15:48 So she had done two nights and we were going into kind of the third day. 15:54 And unfortunately, my uncle, which is my mom's brother, got really sick at home and had to be rushed to A&E by ambulance. 16:03 And his neighbor and my aunt knew that my mom was in A&E still. So they had run over to call call her basically to say that her brother had been rushed into A&E and he was in resus and it wasn't looking good basically he was very very sick and it turned out that he had sepsis and they knew straight away that he wasn't going to make it God love him so it was just a shock like this was not what we were expecting like it was just totally out of the blue and so I said to my mum you know I'll bring you over to the other side of A&E to resus to see him And she was kind of in shock as in like, she didn't really kind of, wasn't even clicking as what was going on. 16:42 And I was like, look, we just go over, we just see what's happening. I said, well, look, he's very sick. And when we went over to Risa, so that's where like the ambulance basically bring the very, very sick and tragic people in. Like we were going down and my mom has a rollator and obviously she was in like pajamas and stuff because I brought her off pajamas to change into, to get comfortable. And she, the nurse that was looking after her the first day in A&E, a lovely man, Luke, saw my mom and me and I think he thought that we were after losing our marbles or something because he was kind of like, why are we in this really, like, in Wiesel? 17:17 And he was looking at us and I said, oh, that's my mom's brother behind the curtain. And he said, oh my God, Mary, I am so sorry. I'm looking after your brother since he came in. And we went in and And we just stayed with him for a while. But like there was Joe, my aunt, his neighbours and stuff. We were all there. So after a while, I said to my mom, we better go back because I was worried in case she'd get called, you know, for more tests or results so that her bed would finally be ready. And when we went back, we were only back about an hour or two and her brother had passed away. 17:50 Oh, my God. He didn't mention it, yeah. 17:53 I was, oh my God, I'm so sorry to hear that. Talk about tragedy. I'm hearing an awful lot of cases of sepsis in the last few weeks. 18:03 Yeah, there's loads, yeah. 18:05 It's really scary. And also, that young man, would you say his name was Luke, that nurse? What a lovely guy. What a lovely, kind guy. 18:15 My mum's nurses were so amazing. They were having the banter with her. They were having the gossip with her. They were so good to her. But like, it's just the fact that like Amy was like it was I kept saying and my sisters like I was like, are we waiting for her to be discharged or are we waiting for a bed or what are we actually waiting for? Nobody knows. 18:35 Nobody knows. They don't know themselves. They're not magicians. They can't magic it up, you know, and then you have the health minister blaming the hospital saying it's your own fault. You're not performing. 18:45 No, get your act together. Yeah, like they did say, like the nurses said, your mum is definitely staying in. Like 100%. She's staying. She's not going home. We are just waiting on a bed. We do not have a bed for her. 18:57 And what about her brother's removal and funeral and everything? 19:02 So she couldn't go to any of that because she actually then... So when we went back to A&E and after we got told that he had passed away, like we had to go down and obviously say goodbye. And it was just, you know, it was just surreal because... we're in the A&E. I'm going to another part of A&E to say goodbye to him. And then we have to bring, I just bring my mom back onto her trolley in the middle of another part of A&E. 19:25 And like I explained to the nurse. 19:28 So when you found out that your uncle had passed away, did you go back down again with your mom? 19:33 Yeah, we went straight back down to see him and just to spend time with him. And the priest obviously came, you know, to say a few prayers and, it was just really, all of a sudden, I don't think anyone kind of, everyone was in shock of what was going on. It was just completely overwhelming. Like, I couldn't believe this was happening. And, you know, obviously, like, my family was absolutely devastated. 19:53 So then when I came back, I said to the nurses, like, to let them know, like, you know, my mum's brother has just passed away around the corner in another part of A&E. And she obviously gave her condolences. I don't know, did she really understand even what I was saying? Like, her English wasn't great and stuff. And, Anyway, that was the end of it. And then, like, my mom still has to do another night on a trolley in A&E after saying goodbye to her brother. 20:19 So, like, they still didn't give her a room, even though she had just gone down to see her brother, like, pass away in A&E on another side of it. 20:28 So it wasn't until the next day then they had a bed for her and they admitted her for, like, she was in there for over a week then. And, like, they were amazing. They were always amazing the whole time she was in there. They were absolutely amazing. But it's just scary how busy it was. And that was actually frightening. 20:45 Yes, on the numbers that we've been hearing over the month of October, it's appalling. But, you know, obviously, this is a much, much more tragic story of a brother and a sister inside in the hospital at the very same time, one on a trolley and the other passing away. That's just, you don't hear of stories as tragic as that all that often. 21:06 No, no. And the fact that, like, you know, they're both in their 70s, you know, like... So I'll just hate to think that like something like that could happen to someone else and they're waiting on their mom up in A&E for more than like two or three nights. It's just, it's not where you want to be looking and it's not where you want to see, you know, your mom on a trolley in the middle of A&E for three nights. 21:26 And then sadly, on top of that, at least she was able to say her goodbyes and then pay her respects after her brother had passed away. But missing his removal and his funeral, that's very sad. How is she coping here, ma'am? How is she coping? 21:40 To be honest, she's out of hospital now and she's doing okay health-wise. To be honest, I don't think it's even really... 21:48 I'd say it hasn't sunk in. 21:50 No, not at all. 21:52 Especially because of not going to the funeral and the removal and not being there for those things that bring it home that someone's not here anymore. 22:02 I just don't think it's really sunk in, if I'm being honest. 22:06 Yeah. She was thinking, did that really happen? Was that a nightmare? 22:10 Yeah, it was like, like I genuinely, because my sister, because I had left the A&E and my sister had rang me to say that my uncle's neighbour, who's like, they're like family, Tim, like they looked after him the whole time, that like she had run over and told my sister that like Tim was in A&E across the way and that like he was really really sick and then my sister panicked and she rang me and she's like oh please come up to the hospital you know Uncle Tim is really sick and I just don't even know I haven't even told my mum yet I don't even know what to say so I ran up then and kind of had to tell my mum like we have to go over and see him and just see how he is yeah thank god she was able to do that that she was able to go yeah that's one of the only consolations that she was there yeah that she was actually there yeah and she was actually able to say goodbye and see him yeah But it was just kind of one of those things that you 22:58 couldn't write it. 22:59 It was just not something you would ever be expecting to hear when you're sitting in A&E already and you're worried about your mum and what's happening with her and then to hear that her poor brother is so sick. 23:11 Well, our thoughts are with the family. For sure they are. Oh, thank you very much. And look after your mam. It's a difficult time for her. 23:19 Oh, yeah. 23:19 I hope she's made a full recovery amongst other things. Brother and sister in hospital at the same time. 23:34 I suppose the only consolation you can take from it is that she was able to say her goodbye. And the staff also, you know, you're looking at those that are working and going flat out 24-7, were able to help and were very kind regarding that very, very sad death. Text 0868-104-106. Pick up the phone on 0818-104-106. We spoke a lot, of course, on Friday about the countdown to Halloween and things associated with that. It's quite interesting because there's a story made in one of the papers this morning of pins inside in trick-or-treat sweet bags. 24:05 This is a story from up the country making the red tops today of two mothers Speaking of their horror, after pins were found concealed inside their children's Halloween treats, the pins appeared to have been carefully pierced through the wrapping paper and right into the chocolate bars. I mean, who does that? I mean, who even does that by accident? Do you know what I'm saying? I mean, it's absolutely mad. And if that wasn't enough for you... I don't want my name disclosed, but my daughter and her best friend planned their Halloween outfits and went trick-or-treating in my estate and also in Elm Grove on Saturday evening. 24:41 Elm Grove. This would be around the Glanmire area, right? They're 12 years old and in sixth class and still love calling door-to-door. My daughter got upset, though, as there were a couple of houses in Elm Grove that said to them, "'Aren't you too old now for trick-or-treating?' They're tall for their age, but it actually really upset them. Maybe just a reminder that kids are still kids and to be mindful how you speak to them. Yeah, I suppose some people have it said before they realise what they've said. There could be two tall 12-year-olds and look as if they're 18 or 20, I suppose. 25:14 Best in circumstances like that to say nothing. Just give them a few sweets and let them go on their way. I was out trick-or-treating this evening in Ballanglana. So this came in from the mums of Glanmire on Saturday night. My teenager and her friend were with my son, who was three. 25:30 A woman refused my kids today as they weren't from the estate. Ha! 25:38 and questioned which estate they lived in. They answered Hazelwood. So the woman said, no. 25:44 Another family came up and she asked the same question. They said, here in this estate, and she gave them sweets in front of my children. Um... 25:54 But if they didn't answer that they were from the estate, they got their marching orders. This really upset my kids. My son has sensory issues, so he didn't understand. He tried to take some sweets from the bowl and she pushed his hand away. I had to take him home. I really thought this was so horrible. They're all kids at the end of the day just trying to enjoy Halloween. Please be kinder to children. It's very, very upsetting. What's the deal here? Is there something going on between the housing estates in Ballanglana and the housing estates in Hazelwood? 26:25 Do you not get on or what? Is there kind of a fallout over something? Is there kind of maybe a, inverted commas, civil war going on between the two areas? Who, in the name of God, will preclude a child, a child that is, from a few suites just because they don't come from the adjacent park in which that person lives in. I mean, that's just not on. I mean, anybody think that that's acceptable in any way, shape or form? Text 0868-104-106. And then from the mums of Glenmire to the balancolic mums and dads, who also at the weekend put up a photograph of what looks like to me, well, I know it doesn't look like it. 27:05 It is. It's a small brown pill. 27:09 Well, it's one of those long, kind of like, tuby pills. Not a roundy one. The long ones. You know, the ones that dissolve. Please check your little one's Halloween bags. This little pill was found in my daughter's bag after trick-or-treating this evening. They were found around the old quarter estate. Like... 27:33 What's going on, like? There's some people out there with vendettas against kids. Pills and pins. Are people trying to kill the children or something? 27:40 Well, like, you wouldn't know. It could either be a shrew multivitamin or like, you know, the dramatic person in me would say it could be a CBD hemp tablet. 27:53 But I'd say it could also be some poor unfortunate with putting the sweets and toys together or the sweets together and just like the vitamin popped in. I have no idea. This does come up every year, cyclically anyway, you know, that people are trying to kill the children. So I don't know. Oh, is it part of the whole Halloween? 28:11 It's part of the whole Halloween vibe. I'm still back in Ballanglana, though, right? So you have a woman down there. Like, I'd love to get into the WhatsApp groups between the houses, you know, and the different people living down there. I'd say there's fierce stories, I'd say. Maybe they're young. They're starting out in life and they might just kind of chill out as they get a little bit older. There's fierce rules, isn't there? 28:35 Oh, my God. I know some of the WhatsApp groups. Not my estate now. But, like, they all have the ring doorbells now as well. So they'd be, like, in the WhatsApp, they're like, these kids were running and knocking. And I'm like, oh, Jesus. Is there a bit of a kind of a... 28:56 standoff between Ballanglana and Hazelwood or what? 28:59 I don't know. There's fierce drama in Glanmire Estates though. A friend of mine lives in a quite a big not those ones now but another one and she was telling me the drama in the group. She had to leave. She was like I'm out of here. It was just too much. What? The kids bunksing the ball off the basketball net outside my door. 29:18 Do you remember the fella going around with the whistle? The little young fella with the whistle? 29:22 Oh gosh. And in many, many cases, the younger age groups are unfortunately either dying or being hurt or involved in crashes. A driver should have to take a test during the lifetime of any learner permit. And there's more then with regards to learner permits and people driving and renewing and not having a license or what have you. What about all the baby boomers who never had to sit a driving test at all due to the massive backlog at the time? Many were just given full driving license without ever having to pass the text. Pentest, many of them are now seniors and are still driving today. How is that fair compared to the restrictions being placed on a learner and a novice driver today? And the cat did a runner. And he hadn't been seen since by anybody. And then about three weeks ago, I seen there's a super value here on the Ballymahon Road. And he was hanging, a signed cat... similar cat was hanging around the super value. And as soon as I seen the picture of the cat, I was like, that is the same cat. And the instinctiveness of cats. I saw, you're a veterinary nurse, as I say, and I'm curious if you have any thoughts on this. There was a report out there recently by a fellow who's done huge amounts of studies in the scientific world about dogs, right? And I don't know whether they're telepathic or whatever the case is, but why is it that dogs can tell when their owners, for want of a better term, are coming home before they've ever got home? 81:07 What's that about? I don't know. 81:10 I don't know whether it's more of a routine thing. 81:13 No, this study went into randomised times when people would come home. Not at five o'clock, not at kind of lunchtime, but it could be any kind of day or night. And it could be five minutes before the person arrives in a car or walks in a front door. That's pretty crazy. 81:35 Isn't it? 81:36 Because it then leads me on to the amount of stuff that we don't really know or understand about pets, particularly dogs. Isn't it amazing? 82:05 What kind of stories have they told you where they were in need of help, is it? 82:09 Yeah, well, we have a Springer Spaniel that comes in here and he was in the garden and he started tearing and trying to rip apart the fence into next door's house. 82:23 And the owners didn't know what was wrong with him. But he wouldn't quit it with the gate anymore. So they got a step ladder and looked over into the garden and the elderly man next door had collapsed. 82:36 That's exactly what I'm talking about. The dog's looking for help and is smart enough to know that he needs to get help. 82:43 Yeah. 82:44 They're incredible, aren't they? It's just incredible. 82:47 But how do they know? Five minutes before a car comes in a drive, there's no adults in the house that's expecting anybody, and a loved one arrives in the door and the dog knows five months. Neil, dogs can detect impending death also through their extraordinary sense of smell, keen observation of human behaviour and the sensitivity to shifts in body chemistry. A dog can know, somebody's telling me about text here, when somebody is unwell or that there's a challenge to their health. Yeah. 84:02 And I imagine that is why you also have particular breeds of dogs that do make very good guard dogs, or they might do very good search and rescue dogs, or they might be good sniffer dogs in the event of drugs and things like that. Because what is it they say that a dog's sense of smell, is it 70 times better than ours, I heard? 84:22 They have 300 million scent receptors in there. 84:26 But how many do we have? 84:29 Nothing like that anyway. 84:30 No, nothing like that. There is one particular house in our estate that children have been warned to stay away from. The children know not to approach this house. especially around Halloween, when they would normally be out trick-or-treating and enjoying themselves like any other children. The situation is particularly concerning because on one occasion, the owner actually pointed their car towards one of the children. 90:48 The Gardie were called at the time and the owner was given a warning. It is extremely upsetting that children living in their own estate have to avoid one particular house out of fear. Halloween should be a time where children can safely enjoy going around their area, not a time when parents are worried about whether or not they might encounter whomever or they could be in danger. No child should feel intimidated or unsafe. Parents should not have to worry about their children simply knocking on a neighbour's door. How has it come to the point where children in a residential estate know there is one house that they must avoid? 91:24 I mean, my only answer to that is because these are the times that we live in and you're as well telling your children to keep them safe. As Cork Airport is a large building, there's considerable amounts of work involved in putting up decorations each year. I'm sure you can appreciate that. I can. This is the Cork-based Musgraves group dealing with an incident in which cyber criminals hacked a specific refrigerator model used in certain supermarkets and it's affecting 13 stores. 99:24 The retailers in those stores are removing products from fridges as a precaution. And I was saying, well, that will be a diminishing problem because less and less people send letters and less and less people send Christmas cards and Emer says that Unpost actually processed more than three million Christmas cards and letters daily during the peak festive season in Ireland, with individual peak nights seeing up to three and a half million cards and letters handled through the National Post system. 100:55 That is an incredible number. I mean... 100:57 If you had given me three choices there and you said, how many Christmas cards on a daily basis? Three million, one million or 200,000? I'd have taken 200,000, I would have said. Do you know what I mean? I mean, with the maturity of years, you possibly look back and you'd say, why did we get so worked up about so many different things? But these different WhatsApp groups, of course, can be very beneficial as well. Sharing different information or stuff that's going on or maybe having people on alert or warned to different aspects of life. So there you have it. You asked that lady if she had a crib in the house. 102:16 But do you put the baby Jesus into the crib as soon as you put it up? If you do, I've seen many a home with baby Jesus already lying in the crib four weeks before Christmas. 102:27 And for people that don't know it, traditionally, baby Jesus should only be placed in the crib on Christmas morning and can remain there then until the crib is taken down. Why? Because when we do celebrate the birth of Jesus, it has to be on December 25th. Otherwise, baby Jesus would have been a premature baby. I'm only saying that tongue in cheek, but think about it. If you want to make a tradition out of it, why not make it the job of the youngest person in the house to place the baby Jesus in the crib on Christmas morning? And what about some of our other traditions, like beating the stale bread off the front door and throwing the ashes out the back door? 103:04 We're losing so many of our traditions, and once they're gone, they're gone forever. We need to hold on to these little customs and pass them on to the next generation, says Pat. Now, that's very interesting, that text. I just know, just a couple of points on that. One is the fact that It's even weird to be talking about Christmas things on the first day, second day, third day of November. But here we are nonetheless. 103:28 Because it seems as if after Halloween is over, it's a free reign to do whatever you want. And if that's what you want to do, go for it. I do know in our crib, which we put up every year. I mean, we have a tradition that would be done for thievery on this. And it's very early to be talking about these things. But seeing as we're on the topic, we take a small little bit of straw. Every year, my son used to go, my daughter used to go and my son has bailed on me. So myself and my daughter visit different cribs, sometimes on St Stephen's Day, sometimes on Christmas morning, wherever the case may be. 103:59 And we would take a little bit of straw from one of them and we put it into our crib at home. So I've got straw going back 32 years, little bits of straw from all over the city inside the crib. But it's the same crib and it's a very beautiful one. I love it very much. But all of the individuals are stuck in there. They're actually glued in. So you can't move them in any way, shape or form, including the baby Jesus who's in the crib the very first day we put it up when technically that's the wrong thing to do. But it's interesting how, you know, you get a text and say, Pat, talking about traditions. And you probably could tie in to some extent the former president, Mary McAleese, saying that, you know, you shouldn't baptise children or little babies because they don't have consent. 104:41 And there needs to be consent for everything. And the front of the mail says, Macaulay is under fire over the view that baptism breaches infant human rights. And you've got to wonder whether we really now at this stage are taking everything too far. I was mentioning earlier with regards to the issue regarding grandparents and consent and the different boxes that say, for instance, the SOC Dems want to have on a birth cert where you could say male, female or non-gender. 105:08 Again, if the world is changing, who am I to disagree with it? If that's how people feel the world should go and the changes that should be made. But Pat believes in tradition and trying to hold on to at least some kind of tradition in the time you live in. He'll let him pull his ears, he'll let him pull his tail and the dog loves it. It's like the dog can just feel the energy coming from the child. 106:21 And you're cool enough with that, that at some stage in the future, unbeknownst to you, that dog could potentially snap 106:30 Yeah, when I say that we're looking to get our own dog ourselves, Alfie is four and we have an almost two-year-old here as well, so it's just a bit mad for a dog right now. But when I've been researching for Alfie for a dog, the top of the list that comes up is golden doodles. 106:50 What kind of a cross is a golden doodle? 106:53 he is a golden retriever crossed with a poodle. So he's the height of a golden retriever and he's the kind of hair, the curly hair like a poodle really. Is he a placid dog then? He's extremely placid. Extremely. Extremely. He barely barks. He's really, really... A lot of schools with units in them actually have golden doodles or lava doodles because their temperaments are very, very calming. 107:21 And do you think that that dog can sense that your son needs a little more care and attention and a little more love? 107:28 Yeah, yeah, definitely 100%. We live in a row that has houses that all have dogs and they're all big dogs actually and bouncy dogs. But this dog always just comes up to Alfie and he'll sit there at his feet and he'll just let him do whatever he wants. No problem at all. And I'm going to get parts of this wrong because it's hard to recall everything. But I know there were two different stories. One was both involved elderly women who died and perished outdoors. They both had Alzheimer's and were living with dementia. 109:38 One was in a country area and the other one was in, I think it was in an industrial estate in the UK. And they both had small little dogs. Don't know. They could have been Cavaliers. They could have been King Charles. I can't remember. But this woman died of hypothermia. She got lost and confused, ended up in a housing, in an industrial estate. Wasn't found for the weekend. And sitting next to her, perished away in the cold as well. Simple as when you leave the house, there's a certain amount of your scent left behind. As the day progresses, the amount of scent degrades and they know by the amount of scent that is left that you are due home soon. It's all about routine, says Stephen. That's an excellent text. However, the research from this geezer that I saw on Instagram said that they have evidence to show that you could come home at an unannounced time. 111:27 It's not as if you leave the house every morning at, say, 7 a.m. and the dog knows that and you come in the door at 5.45 and the dog knows that and you do that every day. This could be an unannounced return to the home, haphazard times that you would come to the house or someone else. You could have a son or a daughter that would be calling. And the dog will know and will be on alert and high alert and up to high dough five or ten minutes beforehand. That's interesting, I thought. It was like, I think if we get 25 questions out of 40, right? So I had just passed the test that morning. And that evening when I was at home, it was late at night. It was about one or two o'clock in the morning. And I wanted to go to the shop to get a few munchies, you know? And I asked my sister, I was like, can you drop me to the shop? It's only literally five minutes away in the car. And it'll take me 35, 40 minutes to walk. And she was like, look, I'm in bed. I can't, no. I was like, okay, can I take your car? 113:08 And she said, yeah, you can take the car, no problem. So I drove down to the shop anyway. And as I was leaving the shop, I kept conking out the car with the clutch because I wasn't used to driving the car, you know. 113:19 There was a small micro car and it was a bit fidgety, the girls were a bit fidgety in it. But I conked out two or three times. 113:26 And just for the record now, you hadn't passed a driving test, but you had passed the theory. 113:32 I had just passed that theory test that morning. 113:34 You have to have that theory test before you can do the official test, isn't it? 113:38 Yeah, before you get your provisional license. I didn't even have a provisional license. All I had was the theory test in my back pocket. So when I was driving back home, I seen the guard car come up behind me with the blue lights and my heart sank. I was like, oh no, they're going to pull me in. 113:54 they pulled up right behind me they pulled right up behind me and they got out of the car and they were like we got cars there that you're possibly driving have you been drinking somebody called them when they saw you conking out all the time Yeah, because I wasn't used to driving, you see, so I wasn't used to the clutch. Yeah, so somebody obviously thought I was drink driving, which I wasn't for the record. I had no drink on me. But I said, no, no, I'm not drinking at all. And then I got a call about somebody's drink driving, and he was like, is this your car? I said, no, it's my sister's car. He was like, do you have a full license? 114:25 I was like, no, I don't. I only have my Terry Test stuff in my pocket. 114:30 And he kind of looked at me and goes, you know, you are going to be banned off the road before you even get your license. 114:36 I was like, yeah, yeah. So he said, like, my leg was racking, you know, I had my foot on the brake and my leg was mad shaking, you know. So he said, step out of the car there a second, turn off the engine, step out of the car. So when I turned off the engine and stepped out of the car, I forgot about the handbrake. So the car actually rolled back and hit the car, the car behind me. 114:57 There was only a small bump. It didn't crash into it. It just kind of rolled back into it. And one of the guards was like, oh, that's another offence, Antio. You have no licence. You have no insurance. 115:07 You have to make damage to a guard of care. And he goes, look, if you want to arrest me, that's fair enough. I took a chance by going to the shop because it was literally talking about a 40-minute walk. It would only take five minutes in the car, which I shouldn't have done. I just took a chance. How old were you? I was only about 19, 20 when this happened. 115:24 Okay. Okay. 115:25 I was just, I was excited. It was just the excitement of passing my theory test. I took a chance by taking my sister's car to the shop, which I should have done, obviously. 115:33 No, no. We'll come back to that if you like. But what happened next? 115:37 So I said, look, if you want to race me, that's fair enough. As I said, I shouldn't have driven the car. It's my sister's car. She's walking in the morning and it's not her fault. She needs the car to get to work. I literally live around the corner. It'll take a couple seconds to drop the car back instead of just getting a tow, waiting for a tow truck and lifting the car on that. 115:59 So he said, all right, we'll drive up there just to make sure that it is your sister's car. So one girl jumped into my sister's car and I jumped into the front seat of the girl with the girl. And I was kind of chatting away to him. I was like, look, sorry about this or whatever. And as we were driving up the road in, there was a bit of banter between the two girls. He was on the radio and he was winding up his colleague. He was like, this car suits you. 116:21 And then the micro suits him. 116:23 The micro suits him. I was messing with the other girl and kind of winding him up about it. But when we got to my house then, the girl wanted to confirm that it was my sister's care. 116:33 So she had to come down out of bed. This is about two o'clock in the morning. She'd come down out of bed and prove that it was her care, her show ID and tax and insurance. It was all up to date. And I turned around and I said, look, am I being arrested or am I going to get a summons in the post? He was like, probably. And he kind of left it at that. But for the past few weeks after that, I was dreading the postman every morning, thinking that I was going to get a summons in the letterbox. Did you? No, I didn't get it. 117:05 So I think the girl kind of realised that I wasn't obviously drink driving, where the call was about drink driving. I 100% wasn't drinking. How long ago was that? 117:15 That was about maybe 20 years ago. 20? 20 years ago. Yeah, about 20 years ago. Yeah, there's been a long time now. 117:21 Oh no, I'm just curious because from a point of view of society and the societal change and what have you, do you think that if that happened now, I think you got two lucky guards there, to be honest, wouldn't you? 117:33 Well, to be honest, one girl was kind of okay. I missed it straight away. No hesitation. I said, look, this is my sister's car. I took a chance. I don't have a license. You know, I told them everything straight out. But the other girl then was rattling off offences. You had no insurance, no license. You're going to get six penalty points. You're going to get a fine. You're going to be banned off the road. You could hit somebody, no insurance. 117:58 But everything that he's saying is right. 118:01 Everything was right, 100%. And I shouldn't have done what I did. Like, we all take chances in life. And I said, look, if it's only going to take me five minutes to drive the car down and back to the shop instead of walking... 118:10 But in that five minutes, you could have killed yourself. You could have killed a child. You could have crashed into another. You know all of that. I mean, I'm not your judge and jury here now. Listen to me. Let he without sin cast the first stone. Don't get me wrong. But you know all of that now, don't you? 118:24 I know 100%. And I said to him, look, if you're going to arrest me, fair enough. That's what, you know, I broke the law. You can arrest me. That's fine. But just, you know, my sister was working in the morning. She kind of knows I took the care. You know, I didn't rob the care. Like I took the keys off her. 118:37 And he was kind of, the other guy was kind of cool about it. But he did give me an awful fright. Even when I was stepping out of the car, when he was telling me to step out of the car, I forgot to put up the handbrake because I was so panicked that the car actually rolled back into the car. Everything is going wrong for me. But that five minutes... 118:58 ended up being about half an hour by the time all that was sorted and back to my house. 119:03 But I was freaked out for weeks every time the postman put a letter through the letterbox. 119:09 So you learned a very serious lesson that went on for weeks on end because you were freaked out that the summons would come and the court appearance and as a consequence the ban and everything. 119:19 You were lucky. I would have been banned after all before I even started but it was just the excitement of passing the theory test that morning. 119:26 You just got lucky man. Everybody deserves a bit of luck in their life. You just got lucky. No tax, no insurance, no license, no nothing and they just decided to let that one ride. You were lucky. 119:39 Yeah, and fair play to him. Not all guards are bad, but in saying that too, he could have arrested me. He could have given me all the offences under the book of that. But, you know, he kind of realised that it was just the excitement of... 119:54 So this girl had a licence, right? She's got a provisional licence. No, no, no. The girl that started all these conversations, her car was taken off her by members of England. 120:04 Oh, sorry, yeah, yeah. 120:05 They took the car and they're legally permitted to do that. If you are on a learner permit, you're driving around in the car, you might own the car, you might have all the plates up and everything. But if you don't have a full driver license passenger with you, They can take the car. You'll get penalty points. 120:23 And I think there was a fine of up to a thousand dollars, I believe. 120:26 I think that's true, but I think I'm open to correction. I think her fine was either 250 or 350 or to get the car back. So they look at it very differently now because young people are the biggest increase in road deaths and injuries on our road. 120:40 Time after time after time. 120:43 There would be young people, boy racers and all them kind of people. 120:47 Not even those lunatics, but people who just feel invincible and they think I've got a license now. I might have an end plate up, but I just I can do whatever I want. Nobody can touch me and they drive like crazy and they just don't have any skills. They might pass a theory test or learn off a route, but it doesn't make them good drivers. You know? 121:05 No, no. And I think they've changed the license now, the provision license that after that you're told that you have to sit the test again or something like that before you could keep getting a license and a license and a license. Texting got on to me this morning. 121:19 It's always nice to have somebody's name in a text, incidentally, but he says, can't come on the air, but learner permit renewals have changed since the 1st of November. So since yesterday, you can't renew your permit now without having sat and failed a test. And you can now only get a maximum of four learner permits and you will need to start again from the very beginning and you can't renew any more. 121:45 So from yesterday, you can't renew your permit unless you have sat and failed a test. This business of just renewing and renewing and renewing the learner permit, never taking a test. That's yesterday's news now. 121:58 But if you fail your test when you're driving, can you still just drive home? Is that still a thing? 122:04 you know if you failed your test you can just drive home that's a very good question what are you supposed to do so you failed your test and you're still a learner you need to have somebody technically somebody there with a full driving licence so you can drive home that's the law that is the law yeah but it's they have to be a bit more strict though because a lot of people how does it work as it is if you're doing a test in Sarsfield Road you have to have somebody with you don't you because you're a learner 122:35 When I did my test, I passed my full license the first time I did mine. I didn't have any full license driver with me. But even if I did have failed this, if I had failed the test, I would have been able to drive home without a full license. 122:50 Yeah, that was then. It's quite a lengthy text from Mount Oval where five teenagers stormed a house and pushed themselves forcibly into somebody's home and And obviously, I also did mention at the same time that there was this gang, this mob that were chasing teenagers who were living in the area with knives. Right. This is from Mount Oval. So with the guys, with the ones that forced themselves into somebody's home, the homeowner ran from the house and ran them. 123:52 The homeowner ran them out of the house with a hammer. 123:56 And it was terrifying for this young family. 123:59 So that was Mount Oval. So annoyed with the behaviour that went on in Mount Oval last night, my son's best friend was attacked by guys with knives. They were of foreign descent. Oh, I see. I'm not quite sure that... 124:12 Why does that matter again? Please, somebody explain to me why somebody would say as to the color of someone's skin. His face was, I mean, it's not as if before the courts or anything, his face was destroyed. Either way, anyway, regardless of what people are describing. He was attacked by guys with knives and his face was destroyed. Our boys are great kids and they have to put up with these horrible experiences happening to them. Neil, I can tell you that it is just getting worse. What are the Gardaí doing about it? I'd rather you didn't mention our details. His son's best friend was attacked by guys with knives and they destroyed his face. 124:47 I understand that people are annoyed and angry, but when you say things like, what are the Gardaí going to do about it? Like, they can't be everywhere at any time of the day or night. That's clearly impossible. We don't have enough of them. I've said this a million times. 125:02 The big issue with this is parenting, right? Everything goes back to parenting. Now, you could say, and I've heard it in the past, I get that, that one glove doesn't fit every hand, but But by and large, I mean, you will have exceptions where parents have done the very best they can for a child, but they just can't manage their son or in some cases their daughter in spite of the best upbringing that they could ever think of giving their child. I get that. But by and large, much of this has to do with parenting or lack of it or not being involved or not concentrating on the job at hand as in rearing your child to be the best person possible. 125:40 And I think that it's intergenerational now with regards to the generations of rearing children. Of course, it just gets worse and worse and worse. But you've got the other aspect of that then, which is the court system, where the Gardaí put in huge amounts of time and effort in investigating a crime. They've got to dot every T and cross every T and dot every I, because if they don't, then there's a defence counsel, sometimes a solicitor, most of the time a barrister, that will drive a coach and horse through them if they don't have everything absolutely right. So the amount of admin and book work that goes into everything now before it gets to court has to be on point. 126:12 And then they get into court and you see things like the odd time you'll see a sentence that you think that's the proper sentence for that crime might involve drugs or some form of an issue involving violence and crime. But a lot of the time you're just thinking this is bewildering, the amount of suspended sentences. So think about how a guard feels about that with all the time and effort that goes in to something just being dismissed. So that isn't working. Prisons aren't working because they're full or Don't even start on our health system. Don't even start children with special needs or people who are on the spectrum that need special care and attention. 126:43 Broken. So not in any way wanted to be disparaging to the greater people living down in Ballanglana. But this all started with one particular woman who asked the kids what estate they were from, etc., etc., and refused them sweets if they weren't from her direct area. Regarding the woman in Ballanglana, she should never have asked children what estate they came from. 127:32 But in saying that, I had 70 pre-made bags of sweets and we were cleared out in an hour and a half. It was agreed within the Ballanglanow WhatsApp group that lights would be turned off when people had nothing left or just didn't want any callers. So that's what I did once all the suites were gone. We had teenagers from other estates, as we could see them coming through later in the night, and they pounded on our doors, trying door handles, shouting through letterboxes, putting rubbish through the letterboxes. 127:59 Oh, my God almighty. And also there was actually just, there was a friend of mine, actually, he had, he was diagnosed later on with cancer. He had cancer in his stomach, but like it went on and on and they couldn't find out what was actually wrong with him. But he had a Bichon freeze that always sat on his lap every night up against his stomach for a long, long, long time until eventually the doctors actually discovered he had cancer. And, you know, he's fine, thank God, that he had cancer. 129:54 And they got it all removed and everything. And since he was diagnosed with that, the dog just left his lap. 130:00 Isn't that mad? 130:03 Yeah, the dog sensed that the cancer was in there. And since the dog, since he's had the operation, the whole lot, everything is fine. The dog didn't go up in his lap. 130:11 I mean, you can't argue with that. Some might say, ah, that's just coincidental, but I don't know. Okay, that's brilliant. That is just a lovely story. But the one about your own dog, right, and the lorry sound on the country road, one could say, ah, yeah, but that's got to do with his hearing. He can hear the lorry before we can hear the lorry. But what about somebody in the city or in a suburb who's in the middle of a housing estate, right, living in a housing estate, and comes back home at different times? You know, it's fine to say, ah, well, the dog knows because the dog knows you always come in at 5.45. 130:43 But what if you come in at four o'clock one day or half ten another day? How do they know five, ten minutes before? 130:50 But basically, like, there could be tractors, any type of lorry passed down here, milk lorries, everything, rubbish lorries. And, like, you bark like mad knowing it's a strange lorry. But the minute my husband's lorry turns down the road, it's different. 131:04 Like, if he doesn't bark, he just knows. The ears are cocked and he knows exactly. 131:08 Can't argue with that, May? 131:11 He knows exactly that he's coming down the road. That would wreck your head, actually, particularly if they bark like crazy and you're intending to take them anyway. That's just routine kind of stuff. They've all day long to do nothing but observe.
